Patent Design and Architecture
Intel has published a patent outlining the integration of MicroLEDs directly into a CPU package. The documentation details embedding MicroLEDs into the package by using a glass substrate and through-glass vias, connecting directly to a die for power and signal routing. The company notes that the purpose of the LEDs includes acting as aesthetic components or indicating operational statuses.
While patent applications remain open-ended regarding commercial implementation, this specific filing focuses on CPUs. Intel suggests the processor may operate the micro LEDs to visually indicate that certain functions are being performed or simply for aesthetic effects.
Potential Applications
The patent describes using the LEDs to illuminate wording across a central processing unit, pointing toward a direct read-out feature on the CPU. The implementation could also utilize multiple colors depending on the design, resembling RGB lighting rather than a diagnostic display.
Glass Substrate Integration
The patent design features a glass substrate sandwiched between two layers of package substrate. A semiconductor die is partially or fully embedded within the glass substrate. The LEDs connect directly to the semiconductor die or through nanowires, while through-glass vias deliver power and signals.
Intel constructs the package utilizing two layers of silicon nitride formed on the package substrate surface and attached to the glass substrate. Intel has researched glass substrates for years, citing significantly higher interconnect density compared to organic substrates.
Although the primary patent illustration shows a single integrated circuit for clarity, the documentation notes that a finished implementation would feature an array of micro LEDs across one or more IC packages, allowing for multiple LED-based functions.
Patents do not guarantee upcoming commercial products. Although Intel filed the documentation prior to its publication, the filing demonstrates exploratory groundwork for future processor design concepts.
