Input Pattern Tracking
A master’s student from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology developed a fingerprinting technique that identified gamers from their mouse and keyboard input patterns as part of their thesis. Shared via online gaming communities, the study tracked mouse and keyboard signals from over a thousand players and correlated them to successfully fingerprint unique users and match them to specific accounts, including alternative smurf accounts.

Accuracy and False Positives
The technique determined unique players 100% of the time from the mouse dataset, while keyboard fingerprinting achieved a 98% accuracy rate. Combining these distinct metrics yields highly accurate detection. Although concerns exist regarding potential false positives given large player bases, statistical analysis indicates a very low probability of two unrelated individuals sharing identical habits across both input devices.
Testing initially encountered false positives that, upon deeper investigation, actually revealed related accounts belonging to the same individual. This uncovered unknown account pairs and successfully linked multiple distinct accounts to a single user.
System Performance and Limitations
Rather than remaining a mere proof of concept, the system is designed to continuously process match demos to build a reference database. Operating efficiently on hardware such as an Nvidia A100 GPU, the system requires further real-world scaling tests against massive player populations, and researchers noted that shared accounts would currently disrupt its accuracy.
Privacy and Ethical Considerations
While such systems offer tools for combating online cheating, they also highlight ongoing industry debates surrounding invasive anti-cheat software, hardware limitations, and user privacy. The creator notes that implementation policies and ethical boundaries remain a decision for game developers.
The researcher suggests that permanent bans might require careful policy calibration, noting that penalties passed through linked accounts could benefit from expiration periods.
