Global Preorders Begin

TP-Link has opened preorders for its first Wi-Fi 8 hardware. The Archer 8 Ultra router is the company’s first entry into a portfolio covering Wi-Fi 8 standalone and mesh routers, access points, and client adapters. Preorders kicked off in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and other global markets. The United States was left off the preorder list due to regulatory restrictions. TP-Link has been unable to secure the Conditional Approvals from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that competitors like Netgear, Asus, and Amazon have received to sell new hardware in the U.S.

While earlier Wi-Fi 7 gear from TP-Link that received prior FCC certification can still be sold, any new Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 8 products are blocked from the market. The company incorporated TP-Link Systems in California to position itself domestically, but those moves faced challenges in legal filings.

Performance and Specifications

Without signs that the U.S. government will lift its freeze on TP-Link hardware, the Archer 8 Ultra remains unavailable stateside. The router utilizes a Broadcom Wi-Fi 8 chipset and delivers up to 33 percent more real-world throughput compared to TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 7 hardware, alongside 24 percent more consistent throughput in high-interference conditions.

The Archer 8 Ultra features two auto-sensing 10 Gbps WAN/LAN ports and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports. TP-Link states that the router covers up to 3,600 square feet and supports up to 200 devices.

Jim Poder, Senior Vice President of R&D at TP-Link, noted that the Archer 8 Ultra combines a Wi-Fi 8 StabilityEngine with intelligent antenna technology and AI-powered optimization to improve network reliability.

Future Roadmap

TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 8 family will expand in Q1 2027 with the Deco 8 Ultra mesh router, followed by the Roam 8 travel router in Q2 2027. Additional PCIe and USB wireless adapters, access points, and range extenders are planned for release throughout the year.
