New AI Policy at UK Games Expo
The UK Games Expo, the largest tabletop gaming convention in the region, has published a new artificial intelligence policy prohibiting games and other products mostly created using the technology from the exhibition floor. Organizers reserve the right to require exhibitors displaying or selling AI-built products to remove them, with non-compliance leading to booth closures and future event bans.
Scope of the Restrictions
The organization emphasized its support for original works created by human designers, publishers, artists, illustrators, and writers. The policy mandates that all exhibited items must be created by humans using their own skills, prohibiting items generated entirely or in significant part by AI tools across tabletop games, accessories, crafts, artwork, clothing, and books. The sole exception permits computerized tools for spell-checking, minor editing, and production or accessibility aids.
Industry Context and Copyright Concerns
Major artificial intelligence firms are currently confronting numerous copyright-related legal challenges regarding data scraping and training practices. Artists and writers increasingly express concern that their livelihoods are threatened by these algorithms, contributing to a tightening job market for creative professionals across the industry.
Background Leading to the Policy
The convention previously encountered public backlash after promoting an AI-built tabletop game and subsequently deleting critical online comments. This announcement marks a definitive shift in the organization's approach toward artificial intelligence content, aligning it with a growing number of entities enforcing strict limitations on AI generation.
