Flock Safety is reportedly planning major layoffs
Morale at the surveillance technology company appears to be declining.
Workforce Reductions
Flock Safety, known for selling AI-powered license plate readers to police departments and cities, is reportedly planning to lay off 18 percent of its workforce. Flock cameras have proliferated across the country, bringing controversy and public opposition in their wake.
The cuts, expected to impact 270 current Flock Safety employees, will take effect at the end of October according to sources close to the decision. Previously, reports indicated that Flock had begun an employee buyout program with severance packages as increasing numbers of its workforce grew discontent amid mounting outside opposition. Flock currently employs about 1,500 workers.
Political and Public Opposition
Flock backlash has spanned multiple political viewpoints. The company has faced restrictions or bans in various regions as political figures voice concerns over surveillance. Local law enforcement agencies have also reconsidered their contracts, while critics and activists have increasingly targeted the physical cameras.
