Google CEO Reportedly Refused Request to Rename Atlantic Ocean in Maps

President Trump claimed that the Google CEO refused to rename the Atlantic Ocean in Maps.

The company previously appeased requests by renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario in Google Maps, but reportedly faced a boundary when asked about the Atlantic Ocean.

The Rally Account

That is the scenario President Trump recounted at a rally in South Carolina. He stated that he asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai whether Google Maps could accommodate a new name for the Atlantic, suggesting either "Trump" or "America." Pichai's response was reportedly a request not to pursue the change.

According to the account, the rationale given was that oceans span multiple countries, though critics note that the previously renamed bodies of water also touch more than one nation.

Trump indicated he would likely pass on renaming the Atlantic, though he mentioned alternative naming ideas for the Pacific Ocean.

Previous Map Changes

Google previously relabeled the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America for US users following an executive order, and later applied a similar change to Lake Ontario. Apple subsequently made comparable updates on its mapping platform.

Meanwhile, inflation is rising, gas is at $4.27 a gallon and diesel is at $6.31, according to AAA. The Iran war has dragged on for 236 days despite Trump suggesting in March that it could be over in four to five weeks. With the midterms less than two weeks away, at least we have a president who's laser-focused on the real issues.
