OpenAI Begins Rolling Out Text Messaging Support for Dot Agents
The new capability functions across both Apple's iMessage and RCS messaging protocols.
Features and Setup
When OpenAI initially launched its Dot agents, the company promised that users would gain the ability to issue instructions via text. The rollout is currently available as a preview for US Pro users, enabling them to send text messages, photos, and voice memos to their Dot. Additionally, the system can proactively reach out with updates regarding ongoing tasks.
By popular request, you can now text your dot. Give it a task to take off your plate or something to keep an eye on, using text, photos, or even voice notes. It will text you proactively with relevant updates. Safe, secure texting via iMessage or RCS.
Security and Integration
To configure texting for a Dot, users must open its profile within ChatGPT and select the texting option, ensuring that iMessage or RCS is enabled on their mobile device. OpenAI partnered with Linq to deliver the messaging infrastructure and conducted thorough penetration testing to verify security. The company states that communication is restricted strictly between the user and their specific agent. Furthermore, memory data remains synchronized between ChatGPT and text conversations to maintain context.
Market Context
The personal AI agent market has heated up following the introduction of alternative services like Anthropic's Claude Duet. While competitors may rely on waitlists and specific tier limitations, OpenAI's rollout expands accessibility for its existing US Pro user base, though availability remains restricted outside of that tier.
