Cast and Premise
It stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two new FBI agents that aren't named Mulder and Scully.
Hulu has officially picked up Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot, after greenlighting a pilot back in February. Reports indicate that Coogler wrote and directed the pilot and will stay on as an executive producer for the rest of the episodes.
Plot details remain sparse, though comments from Coogler suggest this functions as a sequel series rather than a total reboot. He has described it as a new chapter designed to honor the original series while forging a distinct path.
Production Challenges
Both reboots and sequel series carry inherent risks, particularly given the original X-Files' extensive 11-season mythology. However, audiences often resist full reboots of heavily beloved properties.
The show features Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two highly decorated yet vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond after being assigned to a long-shuttered division handling unexplained phenomena.
Jennifer Yale is serving as showrunner for the project, bringing previous writing experience from shows like Legion, See, Dexter, and Your Friends & Neighbors.
The series order was not guaranteed despite high-profile name recognition. Hulu previously developed a pilot for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series directed by Chloé Zhao before ultimately passing on the project.
