The Future of OP-1

Teenage Engineering founder and CEO Jesper Kouthoofd stated in an interview that the company plans to stop making synths, which includes the iconic OP-1 that initially put the firm on the map. While known primarily for music and audio gear such as the OP-XY, EP-133, and TP-7, the company also operates as a design firm with past collaborations involving Ikea, Nothing, and Playdate.

A Major Strategic Shift

The potential end for the OP-1 follows restructuring plans announced internally by leadership.

Here’s the relevant quote from Highsnobiety:

Kouthoofd noted that during a reorganization, he informed his team of the plan to discontinue synthesizers entirely, explaining that the products are no longer viewed as the core business model as the company looks to expand its scope.

Teenage Engineering did not immediately return a request for comment.
