Introduction

Magnetic accessories can be handy, but make sure they're not interfering with your camera.

Introduction

Apple continues to up its camera system capabilities across its latest Pro and Pro Max smartphone lineups, introducing advanced camera hardware with variable apertures and low-light sensors designed to render sharper shots. However, everyday phone accessories can potentially undermine photo quality.

Introduction

Many popular iPhone accessories rely on strong magnets and magnetized metal plates to secure the device to grips, car mounts, power banks, or ring lights. While these additions are convenient, Apple has found that strong magnetic fields can interfere with internal camera components.

Introduction

This occurs because rear-facing iPhone cameras use image stabilization technologies to prevent blurring and preserve focus. These lens-position sensors are hypersensitive to magnetic fields and may become disabled when placed near certain accessories. Apple notes that magnetic accessories may cause images to blur, while other factors like high-amplitude motorcycle vibrations can also cause lasting damage.

How Stabilization Works

iPhones rely on two magnet-sensitive lens-positioning sensor technologies to stabilize pictures. Optical image stabilization, or OIS, uses a gyroscope to sense camera movement when taking a photo, adjusting the lens to reduce motion blur and maintain sharp images.

Closed-loop autofocus prevents gravity and vibrations from causing motion blur through onboard accelerometers and magnetic sensors that measure outside factors and adjust the lens position to preserve sharpness in videos, panoramas, and stills.

Magnets can have a pronounced effect on these photo-correction processes because lens-position sensors are sensitive to strong magnetic fields. Placing a magnet too close to the camera lens can make motion sensing less accurate and limit the range of the lens, potentially disabling OIS and autofocus sensors.

The solution is to avoid accessories that place strong magnetic fields close to the cameras, particularly third-party additions like latch folio covers or car mounts. When choosing accessories, users should consider whether potential picture quality trade-offs are worthwhile.
