Roku apps keep crashing before you hit Play? Here's why
There are a few things you can try to fix it.
Roku products are generally a model of simplicity. There's nothing cryptic about its hardware or software controls, and Roku has mostly avoided jamming its OS full of unnecessary visual flair or recommendations. You can typically navigate into your favorite streaming app in a matter of seconds.
The platform isn't entirely bulletproof, however. Apps or the Roku OS itself can still crash, which can be particularly irritating on a media streamer designed almost exclusively to stream video.
There are several potential reasons for Roku app crashes, most of which can be resolved with a few straightforward actions. More radical tactics, including hardware upgrades, are rarely required.
Why your Roku apps might be crashing, and how to fix it
One possibility is that an app or the OS contains a bug. Roku devices typically update automatically during a cold boot or when left on for 24 to 36 hours. To check for updates manually, navigate to Settings, select System, choose Software update, and click Check Now.
If updates do not resolve the issue, try restarting your Roku via Settings, System, Power, and System restart. This clears background processes and the system cache, which often resolves minor glitches.
Deleting unused apps can also help. Even recent hardware like the Roku Ultra has limited storage space, and filling it up can interfere with the swap space required by the operating system.
When extreme measures are called for
If standard troubleshooting fails, a factory reset is a last-ditch option. This reverts the device to its out-of-the-box state, requiring you to redownload apps and log back into your accounts. You can find this option under System, Advanced system settings, and Factory reset.
For older hardware, crashing may simply indicate that the device can no longer keep up with modern software demands, pushing the limits of available RAM and processor power.
Streaming services may also drop support for older app versions over time for security reasons, making regular software and app updates essential.
