Display and Package Overview
The updated version of the Microsoft-sanctioned Windows gaming handheld, the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, hits a lot of high points for the category, combining the comfortable controls and layout of the original with a great new OLED display. But the ROG Xbox Ally X20 falls short of having it all.
There’s only one configuration of the X20, identical to the top-end X — with 24GB RAM and 1TB storage — though you can get it in a bundle with custom Xreal R1 glasses and a couple of cases. That will run you an ouchworthy $2,500.
The standalone model is still expensive at $1,300, still with no case. While it’s been high at $1,000 since its launch in October 2025, the price hasn’t gone up further.
And this model addresses one key issue with the first Xbox Ally X: It has an OLED screen rather than an IPS screen. It’s a huge improvement, since it adds HDR plus OLED’s wide gamut and high contrast, which delivers a much better visual experience. Colors really pop and highlights glow.
Microsoft is still thrashing a bit in its gaming business, and if you already subscribe to Game Pass, you can’t take advantage of the free month that comes with the X20.
Design and Ergonomics
The X20 is just slightly larger and heavier than the original to accommodate the extra 0.4 inch that’s been added to the screen. The handgrips are more pronounced, and the rubberized texture on the backs provides a secure feel.
This model comes with a basic stand, but it is a relatively cheap inclusion given the overall price tag of the device.
Like Asus’ other ROG 20th anniversary offerings, the X20 has a novel aesthetic, with gold accents and a dark, translucent plastic shell. It also incorporates a transforming D-pad that allows users to switch between a four-way and eight-way control scheme.
It also features newer TMR joysticks rather than Hall Effect, which are engineered to deliver greater precision.
You can lift and rotate the D-pad to change it from a four-way to eight-way on the fly, though there is no indicator as to which way it is currently set.
Since the X20 has the same layout as the original, the triggers, joysticks and bumpers all feel responsive, and Asus’ Armoury Crate control software lets you calibrate the sticks, triggers and gyro.
Software and Performance
Microsoft has been chipping away at streamlining the gaming experience and memory management on these devices, driven heavily by high RAM costs and hardware demands.
Setup is still onerous compared to dedicated gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch, requiring a large number of updates before games can be installed.
Troubleshooting stuck updates
Periodically losing the on-screen keyboard while signing in
Constantly navigating between Windows desktop mode and Xbox full-screen mode for various launchers and settings
Ultimately, the software still feels like gaming is grafted onto a general-purpose operating system.
Performance
Given that it shares the same core components, it performs similarly to the previous Ally X model.

However, the competition has evolved, and newer chips like the Intel Arc G3 outperform the older AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme equipped in this device.
A lot of games remain surprisingly playable. AAA titles running with HDR look fantastic, though performance can occasionally be uneven across demanding software.
Battery life hovers around three hours, which is typical for the category, though users will want to manage HDR settings to preserve power.
Whether the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is worth the money depends heavily on your library. Steam-focused gamers might look elsewhere, but those with games across multiple stores will appreciate the flexibility.
And the stunning display remains a major selling point.
