Update Schedule Overview
World of Warcraft Forever launches soon, and while the game will have a large swath of content available on day one, there will be new content continually added to the game. But how frequently should fans expect new content to arrive? It sounds like Blizzard is willing to take things a little slower than in the modern version of World of Warcraft.
Principal game designer Kris Zierhut stated that Forever will employ a slower cadence than Midnight's aggressive eight-week content cycle, noting that the correct update rate is considered to be closer to once every four months or 17 weeks, equating to three times a year.
This contrasts with the modern version of World of Warcraft, which has maintained an aggressive update cadence since Dragonflight launched in 2022. While that approach provided frequent updates, some players felt the patches were rushed, leading to bugs and repeated content.
Lessons from Past Experiments
Zierhut noted that Blizzard experimented with a faster update schedule in Season of Discovery, an experimental Classic game mode released in 2023, but shortening it to an eight or ten-week schedule felt far too fast.
By committing to a four-month update schedule, Forever aims to avoid the severe content droughts that affected older expansions, such as the extended period experienced during Warlords of Draenor.
Zierhut acknowledged that going six or eight months without new material always feels detrimental to the player experience.
Staggered Content Releases
Although major patches are planned at four-month intervals, players will not necessarily wait four months for new activities. The development team intends to timegate certain elements, allowing some features to unlock progressively after one, two, or three months.
This strategy seeks to ease players into new content gradually rather than overwhelming them with an immediate influx of features followed by extended silence.
According to the roadmap released at BlizzCon, Forever is scheduled to receive its first major update in spring 2027, putting the four-month target timeline into practice.
