Gameplay and Setting Details
Following the recent cancellation of Mass Effect 5—reportedly titled Mass Effect Universe—alongside the closure of developer BioWare, new gameplay details have surfaced regarding the role-playing game revival, including handcrafted missions with Hitman-style freedom, environmental hacking, brutal close-range executions, and the return of Liara.
YouTube content creator Dantics shared these details after participating as a member of the Mass Effect Council, an external community group that provided feedback to BioWare during development. Development sources confirmed that the build included every major alien race.
Set over 600 years after the Reaper War, the game featured a customizable agent equipped with experimental technology. This allowed players to hack and manipulate the environment to see through walls, identify systems, remotely trigger hazards, and execute brutal close-range maneuvers.
Faction Dynamics
The galaxy was divided into three primary factions: a coalition of humanity, Krogans, and Batarians; a separate alliance formed by the Council races; and the Geth as a third superpower operating massive megastructures. This established a galactic Cold War scenario rather than a standard Reaper-style invasion.
Mission Design and Characters
Missions were designed as handcrafted levels reminiscent of the original trilogy, but with added freedom in completion methods similar to the Hitman series. Squadmates could experience internal conflicts, romance options were set to return without being sanitized, and Liara was slated to appear as an Asari Matriarch.
Studio Closure and Community Response
The studio closure and cancellation have drawn widespread disappointment from the gaming community. An internal trailer also leaked online following the cancellation, offering a brief look at the project in development.
Fans have responded with an online petition surpassing 50,000 signatures, while a Canadian politician urged government support for a potential independent buyout of the developers.
