Overview

Maestro Media has announced a new board game adaptation of the mobile title Clash Royale, titled Clash Royale: The Grand Arena, with a Kickstarter campaign slated to launch this month.

The Kickstarter campaign is aiming for an October 20 launch, following the crowdfunding success of Maestro Media's previous Supercell collaboration, Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid. Lead designer David Gordon shared insights into bringing the mobile hit to the tabletop format.

The Grand Arena adapts the strategy and deck-building mechanics of the mobile app into a physical card and board game experience.

Gameplay and Mechanics

The Grand Arena adapts the deck-building and strategy elements of the mobile app into a board game, allowing fans to build decks using physical cards.

Designed for two to four players, the tabletop adaptation has participants control forces featuring eight-card decks built around a chosen Champion. The cards draw from the mobile game's roster, including classic characters and items.

Players take turns attempting to destroy opposing Towers while defending their own across a two-lane board. Moves are restricted by the traditional Elixir resource system, requiring tactical placement of cards for attacks and defense.

Destroying an opponent's Tower awards a Crown, and the player holding the most Crowns at the conclusion of the game secures the win.

Design and Development

Translating mobile gameplay to the tabletop required extensive iteration during development.

Lead designer David Gordon explained that the team experimented with real-time play against clocks, simultaneous reveals, and token management before settling on a turn-based card system focused on Elixir spending to best capture the video game's feel.

The development team also focused on accessibility, play-testing with both franchise veterans and newcomers to ensure the strategy game appeals to broader tabletop enthusiasts.

The Grand Arena follows Maestro Media's previous release, Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid, which was funded on Kickstarter in 2025.
