Dynamic Weather Systems
Grand Theft Auto 6 will take open world weather effects to another level, with simulated tropical storms and hurricanes.
GTA 6 features an advanced weather system designed to handle the diverse and wild climate shifts of its fictional setting, Leonida.
Rockstar vice president of art for lighting and rendering, Owen Shepherd, explained that the weather system has been re-engineered for localized and persistent effects, featuring fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map.
Environmental Impact
The game will be able to simulate moving storm systems across a massive map. In practice, this means localized rain showers can occur in one area while neighboring regions remain sunny, with weather systems leaving lasting effects on the environment.
Rain in GTA 6 creates realistic rainbows under the right lighting conditions, and areas that have recently showered will remain wet on the ground, creating persistent puddles once storms pass.
Tropical Storms and Hurricanes
GTA 6 will also include simulated tropical storms and hurricanes that wreak havoc on the environment. These severe weather events combine heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, gushing water from roof edges and lampposts, rumbling thunder, and dramatic lightning flashes.
While video footage of these advanced weather systems in action has not yet been shown, the combination of persistent environmental changes points to extensive open-world interactions.
GTA 6 launches on November 19.
