A Sedate Approach to Off-Roading
The independent studio behind Absolute Drift and Art of Rally is tackling offroading. Rather than competing against the clock or other drivers, over the hill focuses on exploring an open world solo or with friends at a relaxed, unhurried pace.
Drawing inspiration from the recent cozy games trend, over the hill lacks strict objectives. Players drive around maps to discover points of interest and earn currency to upgrade their vehicles for better environmental navigation.

Off the beaten path
Trial challenges test off-road driving skills over difficult routes, providing a much-needed sense of purpose and achievement compared to the rest of the open world experience.
The title sticks to a minimalist cardboard-cutout aesthetic. While flat and basic in texture, the worlds are elevated by pastel color palettes and lush lighting effects that invite exploration.
Two primary regions, Canada and Algeria, feature multiple sub-areas with varied terrain and dynamic weather events like rain, snow, and sandstorms that actively impact driving dynamics.
An impressive ambient radio soundtrack offers multiple albums ranging from synth-heavy ambient pieces to folksy guitar numbers, successfully establishing a tranquil atmosphere.

Story and characters are sparse. A Buddha statue serves as a tutorial guide alongside a mechanic NPC who provides text-only flavor dialogue matching the gentle, laid-back tone.
Following a brief tutorial, campsites act as fast-travel hubs and allow players to manipulate the time of day or bypass specific weather conditions.
Other map activities include cosmetic-unlocking crates, scenic photography spots, wildlife spotting, and treacherous trial challenges that reward currency upon completion.

Vehicle Handling and Tools
The experience avoids fast-paced driving, utilizing a sedate and considered approach where impatience is heavily punished. Low and high-range gears must be managed carefully to maintain traction on steep slopes and slippery surfaces.
Veterans of similar off-road sims will find familiar mechanics here. Steering is characteristically laborious, with wheels turning slowly to emphasize the challenge of overcoming environmental obstacles.
When stuck, players can rely on an equipped winch system, operable in automatic or manual modes, to haul vehicles out of difficult ditches or down steep descents.
Single-use tools like portable anchors, wooden planks, and car jacks add tactical depth, though some tools require precise placement to be effective.
A respectable selection of vintage-inspired vehicle types—ranging from classic 4x4s to campervans—offer unique speed and handling characteristics.
Vehicle attribute upgrades improve speed, grip, and tool capacity, though the progression paths max out rather quickly.

Multiplayer Dynamics and Gripes
Multiplayer support for up to four players allows companions to help each other out of tricky terrain using interconnected winches, introducing both cooperative problem-solving and playful mischief.
Independent fast-travel options give players full exploration flexibility. The technical performance runs smoothly overall, even at high graphic settings.
The primary drawback is a lack of meaningful activities. While rough-terrain navigation is fun initially, the mechanics lack the depth needed to sustain interest over long gaming sessions.
Future updates and downloadable content will likely be necessary to expand the game's longevity beyond a casual hour-long diversion.
