Introducing QSSR for PS5
Sony is launching a new AI upscaling technology specifically for the regular PS5. The new tech, called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), is a “new performance tier of AI upscaling” that’s a result of Sony’s Project Amethyst work with AMD, according to a blog post.
Sony brings AI graphics upscaling to the regular PS5
Sony’s new Quick Spectral Super Resolution AI upscaling is coming first to Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
QSSR vs. PS5 Pro's PSSR
Sony states that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), available on the PS5 Pro, remains the benchmark for upscaling. Digital Foundry's initial assessment suggests QSSR on the standard PS5 is not as fast as PSSR due to the lack of dedicated machine learning hardware. Consequently, PS5 users can anticipate upscaled 1440p resolution, in contrast to the PS5 Pro's upscaled 4K.
Daniel Craig, Sony's principal graphics R&D engineer, explained to Digital Foundry that PS5 Pro developers typically target 4K output, adjusting render resolution as needed. For the standard PS5, teams must be more adaptable, fine-tuning render resolution alongside intermediate and final presentation targets based on the chosen graphics mode.
Developer Adoption and Availability
Despite the differences, Craig noted that QSSR is essentially a straightforward replacement for games already supporting PSSR, requiring only minimal tuning. This ease of integration is expected to encourage broader adoption among PS5 developers, as Sony plans to offer the technology widely.
First Games to Feature QSSR
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the inaugural titles to utilize QSSR, receiving patches today to introduce the technology as an additional graphics option on PS5. Initial observations suggest QSSR enhances graphics with improved sharpness.
Impact and Potential
Digital Foundry highlights the significant potential of QSSR, noting that it could substantially improve many current-generation titles that have suffered from lower resolutions and inadequate upscaling.
