Atari VCS Shutdown Announced
Following a decade-long saga of delays, name changes, and Atari having to assure crowdfunding backers that its retro console was viable, the Atari VCS platform is being retired early next year. On February 1st, 2027, the Atari VCS software store is shutting down.
The Atari VCS saga will come to an end next year when its software store closes
Ten years after the console was announced, the Atari VCS platform will be shutting down in early 2027.
Hardware and Capabilities
With a design loosely inspired by the original Atari 2600, the VCS was a Linux-based, AMD-powered mini PC that could emulate pre-loaded classic Atari games. Its functionality expanded through an online software store providing access to streaming services and cloud gaming platforms like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now.
Final Updates and Local Migration
Atari VCS owners can download and add software through the official online store until January 31st, 2027. After the store shuts down, previously downloaded apps and games remain usable. Atari plans to release an operating system update allowing users to migrate functionality to their local machines, removing dependencies on Atari infrastructure. The company also intends to release an Atari Home Brew app for community-developed software.
