Nintendo is preparing to launch a Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a major fall release.
Modern Updates and Classic Fidelity
Releasing 28 years after the original, the remake features a more realistic visual style and modern improvements like a jump button, sprint, full voice acting, and a “Threads of Time” progress tracker. While updated, many elements remain faithful to the classic N64 experience. Nintendo is also releasing a special edition Switch 2 console and Pro Controller with Triforce imagery.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is scheduled to release on November 5th.
Gameplay Enhancements and Original Mechanics
Developers confirmed their intent to preserve the original game's experience, including the ability to spam the Roll Attack across Hyrule Field. The remake will retain this feature while also introducing a dash mechanic.
Art Direction and Developer Insights
In a developer Q&A, Nintendo discussed changes to gameplay and the new visual style, which was inspired by puppet shows. Art director Aya Shida explained that puppet shows and practical effects create a convincing sense of character existence within fantasy worlds, a feeling that resonates with the nostalgia of the original game.
Pricing and Early Impressions
The remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on November 5th. Physical editions may see a price increase from $59.99 to $69.99 after launch, while the digital version will remain at $59.99. Hands-on impressions suggest the reimagined N64 masterpiece is enjoyable, with fantastic graphics and art style, and modernized controls for easier accessibility, especially for players familiar with newer Zelda titles.
Nintendo has released an overview trailer for the Ocarina of Time remake, showcasing its art style. Early previews indicate a positive reception, with many looking forward to returning to Hyrule.
Modernizing a Timeless Classic
The Switch 2 remake aims to capture the timelessness of the 1998 N64 classic, which pioneered 3D graphics and open-world exploration. Modern changes make the game feel fresh, addressing frustrating aspects of the original. Features like the "Threads of Time" progression marker and Zelda Notes integration via the Nintendo Switch app, along with a dedicated jump button, make it more welcoming to players introduced to the series through titles like Breath of the Wild.
Hori also unveiled a $49.99 electronic Ocarina of Time during Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct. This accessory allows users to play pre-programmed songs, create their own, or use it with the remake’s sound recognition feature.

The remake's November 5th release date was announced during a Legend of Zelda 40th anniversary stream, positioning it as one of the few major titles launching alongside Grand Theft Auto VI. First teased in June, the anniversary event provided a clearer look at Nintendo's approach to remaking this influential 3D Zelda adventure. Producer Eiji Aonuma described the Switch 2 exclusive as a “faithful interpretation using modern technologies.”
Nintendo initially announced the remake during a Nintendo Direct presentation, confirming its 2026 launch on Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the first major franchise release since 2024’s Echoes of Wisdom and follows upgraded Switch 2 versions of Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild, as well as Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment.
