Modernizing a Classic
With its upcoming remake for the Switch 2, Nintendo might have nailed the timelessness of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The 1998 3D action adventure game for the Nintendo 64 has been reengineered with changes that make it feel more modern and surprisingly atmospheric. Based on early hands-on time, it is shaping up to be a definitive version that addresses the most frustrating aspects of playing the original.
The Ocarina of Time Remake Feels Surprisingly Modern
New technology and gameplay improvements make it easier to dive into Nintendo’s defining title.
Nintendo fitted Ocarina of Time with modern updates to welcome players introduced to the series through recent releases like Breath of the Wild. The remake includes a new progression marker called Threads of Time viewable in the pause menu, alongside smartphone integration for maps and a dedicated jump button.
Hands-On Experience
A preview event allowed for hours of playtime spanning early sections with Child Link and later sequences as Adult Link after pulling the Master Sword from the Temple of Time. The core story remains a standout, and quality-of-life improvements enhance overall immersion.
Link controls with greater responsiveness and lock-on combat feels refined. Item and weapon swapping no longer requires constantly opening the pause menu, thanks to a shoulder button shortcut that pauses action while players select items with an analog stick.
Visuals and Atmospheric Horror
The Forest Temple highlights the realistic art style and darker horror themes that were difficult to convey on original hardware. Dynamic lighting casts realistic shadows through stained glass windows, creating a vivid and intense atmosphere.
A Definitive Way to Play
Ocarina of Time remains an influential milestone in gaming history. The remake arrives at a time when the Zelda franchise enjoys massive popularity following Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches for the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, November 5th.
