Nintendo has explained why it chose to develop another The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.
The Motivation Behind the Remake
Franchise producer Eiji Aonuma discussed what sparked the team's desire to return to one of the most treasured stories in gaming history during an Ask the Developer Q&A session. The discussion covers what it was like to revisit a classic game for the Nintendo Switch 2 and how the project came to fruition.
The upcoming reimagining marks the second time Nintendo has remade The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, following the 2011 release for the Nintendo 3DS. Aonuma noted that several factors influenced Entertainment Planning & Development Production Group No. 3, with the franchise's 40th anniversary serving as a primary milestone.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the original Legend of Zelda game. Aonuma considered what to create as series producer and noted that many current team members have only worked on recent titles, prompting questions about whether they fully grasp the significance of Ocarina of Time to the overall franchise.
Educating a New Generation of Developers
Aonuma worked on the original Nintendo 64 game when it launched in 1998 and carried that perspective into subsequent entries, but newer developers lack that direct familiarity with the title's origins.
Allowing staff members to revisit the original story and leave their own mark on it aims to help shape future entries in the series.
Learning the game structure and development style of the original title by rebuilding it as a full remake can provide new insights for future development, leading the team to conclude that now is the appropriate time to revisit the game.
Balancing Open Worlds and Paced Narratives
Aonuma also noted that the team wanted to offer players accustomed to open structures like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom the experience of a carefully paced adventure that gradually builds up player growth and narrative comprehension.
The latest remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches for the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5.
