Introduction to Foldable Apps

One of the best reasons to get the iPhone Duo over an Android foldable is the app selection. It is clear that developers have been preparing for this device, as there are lots of apps that have been optimized for Apple’s first foldable.

Apps like Netflix put playback controls on the bottom half of the screen in seated mode, and there are some really fun and ingenious examples of what foldable-first apps should look and feel like, from music to games.

After living with Apple’s $2,000 device, here are the favorite iPhone Duo apps evaluated so far.

Slack

Slack utilizes a two-column layout that puts rooms and contacts on the left and messages on the right. Controls are located on the right side, including Home, Direct Messages, Notifications, and Search, with the option to remove the left pane from the menu at any time.

TikTok

TikTok features an optimized app for the iPhone Duo that lets users seamlessly scroll videos on the cover display and provides an immersive viewing experience in portrait mode on the main screen. Flipping to landscape allows reading comments on the right while scrolling on the left.

Top Gaming and Social Apps

UnGodly is a fantasy action RPG that leverages the iPhone Duo’s A20 chip and 7.6-inch screen, letting players control multiple characters with complex lighting effects and reflections.

Meta offers fully optimized Duo apps including Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. Instagram provides an immersive video experience on the front display, while the inside display supports both portrait and landscape viewing with comments locked to the right side.

Deck-Man

The Deck-Man app transforms the device into a 1980s-style Walkman. When open, music is selected via virtual cassette tapes synchronized with Apple Music, and closing the phone displays a spinning cassette with playback controls on the front screen.

Media and Productivity Tools

YouTube TV content expands to full screen once playback begins, and supports a Multiview feature allowing users to watch up to four shows or movies at once, as well as continuous playback in tent mode.

Spotify

Spotify takes advantage of the large display by offering an expansive view of the music collection alongside recommended stations and a dedicated mini player that pops up on the right side.

Perplexity

Perplexity utilizes a two-column layout on the main display for AI-assisted queries, supporting Deep Research projects and built-in assistants for drafting emails and managing tasks.

Netflix

Built from the ground up for the foldable form factor, Netflix allows users to watch movies and shows full screen or use tabletop mode with content displayed on top and controls below.

OpenTable

OpenTable displays wide restaurant photos stretching across the large screen with available times at the top and a Notify Me feature for last-minute table openings.

Carrot Weather

Carrot Weather offers customizable layouts and multiple widgets to help users track hourly and 7-day forecasts, UV indexes, sunsets, and more at a glance.

Gemini

Gemini features a two-column layout showing the main menu and recent history on the left alongside the chat window on the right, though some interface elements require adjustment on larger screens.

PianoFold

PianoFold is designed for the foldable nature of the device, offering immersive gameplay in laptop mode where players hit bars on the bottom display as colorful notes fall from the top.

Airmail

Airmail syncs Gmail, Outlook, Exchange, and other services into a single inbox featuring a navigable two-column layout and customizable swipe actions.

Battlefleet Duo

Battlefleet Duo mirrors the classic board game in tabletop mode, letting users position ships on the bottom display and launch attacks on the top screen with visual and audio feedback.
