Apple Secures Huxe Agreement

Apple revealed in a regulatory filing that it has reached an agreement to bring on team members and technology from personalized audio startup Huxe, in what is commonly known as a reverse acqui-hire deal.

Apple disclosed to the European Commission that it has agreed to make employment offers to certain employees of Huxe AI, and to receive a non-exclusive license to Huxe intellectual property rights.

Understanding Reverse Acqui-Hires

Reverse acqui-hires emerged in recent years as a way for larger companies to hire key team members and license technology from startups without acquiring the startups outright, allowing them to build up AI talent and technology without drawing as much antitrust scrutiny.

Startup Shutdown and Transition

In the case of Huxe, the startup was founded by developers who had previously worked on AI-generated podcast features. Huxe announced that it was shutting down, removing its app from application stores, halting service, and deleting user data.

The team stated that they were moving on to new projects and would not continue development of the product.

Shortly after Huxe announced its closure, Apple notified the European Commission of its deal.

Regulatory Filing Details

The regulatory filing does not state who received employment offers or whether they accepted them, nor does it disclose specific details about Apple's product plans.

Industry Context

Huxe's shutdown announcement followed shortly after rival platforms unveiled AI-powered podcast generation features, suggesting potential interest in adding similar capabilities to the Apple Podcasts application.
