Trade Secret Allegations
OpenAI claims a former employee took more than 100 files related to its product plans before joining Apple. In a legal filing, OpenAI accuses the unnamed employee of sending this information to a personal account and then presenting it to Apple leadership, including the vice president of the company’s operations in Asia.
OpenAI claims an ex-employee took its product plans and presented them to Apple
The former employee took more than 100 confidential files before leaving to join Apple, OpenAI alleges.
Confidential Documents and Hardware Data
The filing is tied to an ongoing legal battle between Apple and OpenAI over trade secrets, with OpenAI now bringing accusations of its own. It alleges that the files in question contain images of at least one unreleased device, along with supplier information, engineering data, project files, standards for cosmetic finishes, and reports about the coating and sealing of hardware components.
OpenAI also links Apple’s new HomeView smart display and other recently revealed devices to the former employee’s presentation. OpenAI claims that the presentation occurred months prior and that Apple is now leveraging the information for its push into AI-enabled products.
Broader Context and Corporate Dispute
Apple’s product development typically operates on an extended timeline, and its smart display concept has faced rumors for years. Conversely, Apple has previously accused OpenAI of stealing confidential documents and monitoring hardware prototypes to aid the development of its own products.
OpenAI expressed concern that its trade secrets and confidential information are now circulating internally at Apple, potentially allowing engineers to shape upcoming products using OpenAI's work. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
