Formation of the Super Intelligence Force
President Donald Trump has announced the formation of a new Super Intelligence Force, which he stated will be led by national intelligence director Jay Clayton and other members of his administration.
The Super Intelligence Force is tasked with coordinating federal government efforts to ensure America's global leadership in 'Super Intelligence,' which Trump described as a transformative technology. He stated its purpose is to protect American interests and improve citizens' lives.
Background and AI Safety Debate
This announcement follows Trump's September statement about forming an AI Force and appointing an AI czar, despite his previous dismissal of AI safety debates as politically motivated.
Subsequently, an executive order rebranded AI as 'super intelligence,' a term adopted by tech executives at a White House gathering to sign a non-binding safety pledge.
Leadership and Structure
The task force's name aligns with the new branding. Jay Clayton will chair the Super Intelligence Force, effectively serving as the AI/SI czar. Andrew Ferguson, Emil Michael, and Scott Kupor will serve as vice chairs.
Task Force Objectives and Timeline
The task force is mandated to produce a report on AI's risks and opportunities within 120 days. Clayton has emphasized the importance of the United States leading in AI, citing the risk of falling behind other nations.
Its charter includes developing plans for addressing 'SI-enabled threats' to society, while also aiming to prevent overregulation that could hinder innovation and competition.
