AI Transparency Labels

YouTube Music announced the rollout of a new labeling system aimed at improving transparency around songs created with the help of generative AI. Listeners can now easily identify tracks created using artificial intelligence, including those involved in composition and vocals.

The label appears directly on the player page. Clicking on this label provides additional information regarding the specific role of artificial intelligence in the creation of the track.

These transparency labels also extend to the main YouTube application.

Detection and Designations

YouTube collaborated with music partners and deployed its own detection tools to identify AI-generated music. Partners using the platform can declare their work's use of generative AI through one of three designations: Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI, or No Gen AI.

Fully Gen AI applies to tracks that are entirely generated by algorithms, while Partly Gen AI refers to works where artists incorporated artificial intelligence components alongside live elements. Tracks edited using standard pitch-correction tools such as Auto-Tune fall under the No Gen AI category.

Industry Approaches

The update arrives as artificial intelligence-generated music rapidly expands across streaming platforms, prompting various industry responses. Apple Music and Spotify have similarly adopted or planned transparency labeling and filtering mechanisms.

Platform Policies

Deezer has implemented stricter measures, reporting high volumes of daily fully artificial intelligence-generated tracks. The platform labels detected content, excludes it from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists, and withholds royalties from fraudulent streams while developing a user filter.

TIDAL also labels recordings identified as entirely generated by artificial intelligence, permits listeners to disable them, and excludes those recordings from royalty attribution.

Monetization and Tools

By contrast, YouTube focuses primarily on disclosure rather than restrictions. Its labels inform listeners about artificial intelligence involvement without making tracks ineligible for monetization, while the company continues experimenting with generative tools like Dream Track for select creators.
