AMD is bringing its next-gen FSR 4.1 upscaling tech to Xbox
It is coming soon to the X/S and Ally devices.
FidelityFX Super Resolution Details
AMD announced that it is bringing its FSR 4.1 upscaling tech to Xbox consoles. This includes the Xbox Series X/S and the Ally X, Ally X20, Ally S and Ally handheld consoles. FidelityFX Super Resolution is a proprietary technology that renders a game at a lower resolution to conserve resources but uses machine learning to create a sharper image.
The Series X and Ally X are already very powerful, so the real benefit here will likely be for those who own the Series S, Ally S or the original Ally. These machines should experience a performance boost when FSR is activated.
Developer Integration and Timeline
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vilet stated that close collaboration with AMD has optimized the technology, providing developers with another tool for performance and visual quality.
A firm timeline has not been established for all devices. Video indications suggest FSR 4.1 will arrive on the Xbox Ally X before the end of the year, while other consoles remain listed as coming soon.
Broader Hardware Support
AMD also announced that FSR 4.1 is coming to older RX 6000-series graphics cards and laptops powered by Ryzen AI 9 processors, following prior availability on 7000-series cards.
Industry Context
Sony maintains its own upscaling technology called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, which supports select titles on the standard PS5 similarly to the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution software on the PS5 Pro.
