Tesla's redesigned Roadster has a cold-gas thruster option, but you'll need $250,000 just to reserve it
The automaker has unveiled the vehicle with some unusual vehicle demonstrations.
Design and Stunts
Tesla has unveiled the next-generation Roadster, years after the company initially showed off its concept prototype and following multiple launch delays. Leadership introduced the vehicle during an event at a test site with a dramatic driving demonstration. The car drove up a ramp and stopped while hanging upside-down, and later jumped off the ramp while utilizing an integrated thruster system to stabilize its movement.
During the showcase, an Optimus robot was placed in the driver's seat for display purposes, while the vehicle maneuvers were automated. Tesla explained that the Roadster utilizes a suction system at the base of the automobile that allows it to stick upside-down to a ramp. The manufacturer noted that this multi-mode fan and ground sealing arrangement pulls air from beneath the vehicle to generate downforce suction, keeping the car secured even while stationary.
Propulsion Technology
The vehicle is designed to jump off ramps and land safely using attitude-control thrusters and rear thrusters incorporating technology adapted from aerospace applications. These advanced cold-gas thrusters utilize all-electric actuators to deliver precise thrust capable of making micro-adjustments rapidly.
Pricing and Availability
Production for the new Roadster is scheduled to begin in 2028.
Tesla is accepting reservations requiring an initial deposit, with significant additional payments required for the base vehicle. The thrusters and air suction capabilities require extra packages. The Thrust package, which includes the suction system and acceleration thrusters, requires a substantial additional payment following reservation, while a full-flight Rocket version remains invite-only.
