WhatsApp is taking on Partiful with expanded Events feature

The latest update to WhatsApp allows users to send event invitations to guests who do not have a registered account on the platform.

New Scheduling Hub

WhatsApp is launching a dedicated Events feature accessible through the settings menu. This hub serves as a central location for users to view past and upcoming plans, manage event details, and track RSVPs. The feature is scheduled to roll out to all users over the coming weeks.

Privacy and Guest Access

Hosts can personalize events with header photos and custom reminders. A key addition is the ability to invite individuals without WhatsApp accounts, who can view details and RSVP without signing up. Privacy protections ensure that a host's phone number remains hidden from unknown guests, and event addresses are only visible to non-users after they have submitted an RSVP.

Platform Strategy

This update positions WhatsApp to compete more directly with dedicated event-planning services like Partiful. By enabling participation for non-users, the platform continues its recent trend of increasing accessibility, following the introduction of video call access for non-users and the implementation of usernames to protect user privacy.
