These are impressions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign.
A Strong Return to Form
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's campaign ties together a multi-year series of stories well, delivering an exciting string of missions that focus on new ideas rather than getting bogged down in the past. It stands out as the best Modern Warfare entry since the 2019 reboot.
This collection of blockbuster sequences built as a single-player experience contrasts sharply with previous missteps in the franchise. Infinity Ward manages to pick up past threads successfully thanks to a smart structure that splits the two halves of the story until they collide, providing variety in mission design and tone.
Captain Price remains at the center of the Modern Warfare plot, operating as a wanted lone wolf following previous disasters. To clear up the tangled narrative web, the developers prune superfluous characters introduced in past games, providing a clearer sense of finality to this chapter.
Narrative Structure and Characters
Price’s story takes place over five days leading up to a fictional North Korean invasion of South Korea. While the primary Russian antagonist does not match the well-developed threat of older entries, Mads Mikkelsen steps in as a formidable new adversary.
Price’s chapters play out like a spy thriller, packed with parkour escapes and stealthy infiltrations. Although Mikkelsen's performance is unsettling, the character receives limited screen time, making the Korean conflict sections feel like the more engaging and emotionally grounded half of the narrative.
Mission Variety and Open-Zone Design
The campaign features 16 missions spanning different locations and time shifts, mixing traditional military operations with behind-the-lines ingenuity. Players shift between fast-paced urban combat and tactical defensive objectives.
New characters like Park Hyun Jun provide an emotional anchor, supported by a squad that balances levity and seriousness. The game brings depth to the opposing factions rather than relying on one-dimensional portrayals.
A standout mission named Stranded incorporates extraction-style mechanics, requiring players to forage for supplies, raid outposts, and craft equipment to survive in a harsh environment.
This expansive chapter embraces freedom of approach, allowing players to choose their objectives across a large snow-covered map filled with hidden secrets and puzzles.
Spectacle and Combat Mechanics
The campaign balances open exploration with high-spectacle operations, such as intensive beach landings and dynamic character-switching airfield escapes, though it lacks a singular iconic mission to rival the series' historic high points.
Minor pacing stumbles occur during forced stealth segments and an imprecise melee system, but these issues are rare. Classic elements like chopper gunner raids and explosive tank sections continue to hit the mark.
Gunplay remains refined and punchy, supported by slick movement mechanics that allow smooth transitions between sprinting, sliding, and mounting cover. Managing ammunition and armor is essential against tougher enemies.
Campaign Verdict
Modern Warfare 4 successfully reinvigorates the series with a consistently strong set of missions, memorable new bonds, and impressive blockbuster battles, bringing the saga to a satisfying close.
