Early Map Access Confirmed
GTA 6's world won't be blocked off by story progression, Rockstar confirms.
In a new preview from Edge magazine, Rockstar Games confirmed that GTA 6's map will open up relatively early. This contrasts with titles like GTA 4, where story progression was required to access the full map, but aligns with GTA 5's approach of offering free exploration after initial tutorials.
The state of Leonida, GTA 6's setting, will be largely accessible early on, allowing players to explore freely after initial introductions to characters and mechanics. This means players won't be confined to specific areas like Vice City for extended periods, even as the story naturally guides them through various locations.
Precedent for Open Worlds
While Red Dead Redemption 2 offered extensive freedom, it did restrict access to the original Red Dead Redemption map until the game's conclusion, with players being eliminated if they attempted to enter prematurely.
Developer Discovery and Density
The first Red Dead Redemption also limited access to certain regions until story progression. In contrast, GTA 6 aims for immediate player freedom, with Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut noting that even developers are still uncovering new locations within Leonida.
This extensive world is attributed to the game's density, with Garbut highlighting an "order of magnitude more interiors" than previous Rockstar titles, each meticulously handcrafted with exceptional detail.
Release Platforms
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19 for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
