Fans Rally After BioWare Closure
Electronic Arts shut down BioWare, canceling its upcoming Mass Effect project. Following a leaked trailer for what was known as Mass Effect Universe, fans have turned to a community petition in an effort to preserve the franchise.
The #SaveMassEffect petition launched on the day of the studio closure and quickly surpassed its initial 30,000 signature goal. Instead of asking EA to reopen BioWare, the petition requests that EA either assign another studio to fund and develop the next Mass Effect title or license out the intellectual property.
Petition organizer Joe Smith highlighted the series' impact, noting that the sci-fi universe led by Commander Shepard has captivated millions of players worldwide while recent corporate decisions have cast doubt on its future.
Industry Outlook and Challenges
While such petitions rarely force corporate reversals, industry analysts suggest that selling the intellectual property remains difficult due to high valuation costs and major publishers focusing on internal projects.
Industry analyst Joost Van Dreunen noted that BioWare's properties share similarities with other recently divested studios, remaining well-known yet expensive for prospective buyers.
A Canadian politician has also urged government assistance to help former BioWare employees pursue a buyout, though such an outcome would face significant logistical hurdles.
Despite low odds of a direct continuation, community support remains strong as players mourn the studio's closure and look toward spiritual successors in the sci-fi genre.
