Future Adaptations
Yoshinori Kitase, producer of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy and director of the original Final Fantasy VII, was optimistic about the possibility of more movie adaptations for Final Fantasy games and hinted that Square Enix is likely interested in pursuing original IP moving forward.
It seems like every major video game developer is hawking out their IP for TV and film adaptations these days. And, for the most part, many of these have been quite successful, with video game adaptations growing increasingly popular across film and television.
One developer that’s been notably absent from this trend is Square Enix. While the Final Fantasy games have had their fair share of adaptations over the years to mixed reception from fans, we haven’t seen one on the big screen in quite some time.
Producer Insights
Speaking at an industry event, Yoshinori Kitase was asked about Square Enix’s plans for future movies. And while Kitase couldn’t share extensive details, his response was optimistic regarding transmedia projects.
Given the scope of the Final Fantasy VII remake project, which explored the world of Final Fantasy VII far beyond the original version, future games or TV series inspired by the story remain a distinct possibility.
Focus on Original IP
What’s more, Kitase also indicated that Square Enix is likely to pivot its focus toward more original stories and IP following the conclusion of the massive Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.
The company remains primarily inclined to invest in new titles and new games. However, special projects driven by veteran creators who hold strong attachments to classic properties may still see bespoke remakes or related entries.
The third and final game in the Remake trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is scheduled to release on April 28, 2027, across multiple modern gaming platforms.
