As development on Dawn of War 4 gathers pace, we are getting a clearer picture of how the real-time strategy game will play. King Art Games has shared numerous gameplay videos highlighting competitive multiplayer, but the mechanics of the iconic Space Marines remain a focal point for fans.
The poster boys of Games Workshop's tabletop universe have led video game adaptations from day one. In Dawn of War 4, the Blood Ravens return alongside the Dark Angels and, briefly during the campaign, their primarch, Lion El'Jonson. We spoke with director Jan Theysen to detail how the faction functions, explore winning strategies, and examine what sets them apart from the Necrons, Orks, and Adeptus Mechanicus.
In Dawn of War 4 the Blood Ravens return, but this time they have help in the form of the Dark Angels and, briefly during the campaign, their primarch, Lion El'Jonson. In this exclusive interview with director Jan Theysen, we go into detail on how the Space Marines actually work in Dawn of War 4, explore some winning strategies, and find out what sets them apart from the Necrons, Orks, and the Adeptus Mechanics. We’ve also got a batch of exclusive screenshots showing off the Space Marines in all their glory, which you can view via the slideshow below.
IGN: How would you describe the Space Marine faction in terms of how it plays and how its different from the other factions at launch?
Elite Faction Dynamics
The Space Marines represent the most elite faction in the game. Players control relatively few units that carry high resource costs but exceptional combat effectiveness. Early game survival is paramount, requiring careful management, protection, and upgrades for a small, highly equipped strike force.
While early-game units boast immense power capable of defeating any rival start unit single-handedly, low numbers create strategic challenges. Total map dominance is impossible due to limited squad counts.
IGN: What would you suggest as a good strategy for the Space Marines in multiplayer?
Multiplayer Strategies
In skirmish and multiplayer modes, capturing resource points quickly is vital. Space Marines face initial disadvantages in map coverage because they field fewer units than competing factions.
Encountering enemy units usually results in victory for the Space Marines. Aggressive expansion and rapid point recapture work well, as opponents struggle to dislodge them. Players can stand their ground, utilize auto-heal capabilities, and withstand overwhelming attacks while waiting for reinforcements.
Space Marines bypass traditional builder units, calling structures down from orbit anywhere on the map. Production buildings can be placed near resource points or forward lines to shorten reinforcement routes. Units can also be produced in reserve and deployed via Drop Pod or Thunderhawk for rapid shock-and-awe tactics.
IGN: What are some of the little details you added to the Space Marines that players will notice?
Equipment and Specialization
Levelling up unlocks specialized weapon loadouts rather than simple straight upgrades. Intercessors can be tailored for long range or rapid auto-bolter fire, while Dreadnoughts can be configured with Gatling guns for infantry or plasma weapons for anti-vehicle combat.
This design philosophy echoes the original Dawn of War, encouraging players to construct highly specialized squads targeted at specific roles, such as hero hunting or vehicle destruction.
Faction accessibility remains high due to lower unit counts, forgiving players who miss brief windows of attack. However, losing units carries heavy recovery costs since replacements require both rebuying and re-upgrading.
IGN: In terms of animation and design, how did you approach building the Space Marines so they don’t all run around looking like Buzz Lightyear?
Animation and Scale
Translating massive armor proportions into fluid animations presented a core challenge for developers. Balancing brute strength with high mobility required careful tuning so that units felt powerful without mimicking standard human speed.
Visual comparisons against smaller factions, such as Orks or Imperial Guards in skirmishes, clearly emphasize the massive scale and destructive capability of a Space Marine.
The game campaign and tutorial explicitly establish baseline human vulnerability with Imperial Guards before introducing Space Marines, ensuring their superiority feels earned.
IGN: What are the most powerful endgame Space Marine units?
Endgame Units and Characters
Space Marines lack a single definitive super-unit in the late game, instead relying on a consistently powerful roster. Infantry choices range from Terminators and Bladeguards to Eliminators.
Armored options feature Gladiator tank variants, including the Lancer and Reaper, alongside the Redemptor Dreadnought, which functions as one of the largest units available.
While powerful, these units are designed for standard battle deployment rather than functioning as solitary game-ending behemoths like the Ad Mech's Imperial Knight.
IGN: Which characters are available for the Space Marines and how do they work?
The faction features the highest number of playable characters. Blood Ravens include Cyrus, an infiltrator sniper utilizing stealth mechanics, and Jonah Orion, a Librarian capable of area-of-effect spells.
Dark Angels are represented by Astoran, a durable Terminator Captain adaptable for offensive or defensive builds, and Ezrael, a fast Outrider Chaplain who buffs nearby allies and handles rapid tactical interventions.
IGN: Since the last time we spoke the game was pushed back to December. What are you now able to achieve that you wouldn't have been able to otherwise?
Reflecting on the recent release delay, Theysen noted that the extra time allowed the team to integrate community feedback from playtests and implement polished quality-of-life additions.
Moving the launch window from September to December provided an opportunity to refine visuals and performance while incorporating features previously slated for post-launch updates.
Avoiding a crowded September release window ensured the final product benefited from crucial polish cycles.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 launches on PC on December 3, 2026.
