Xbox Financial Results and Hardware Sales
The head of Xbox has insisted that sales of the console are constrained by supply and that there is more demand than available units, as Microsoft’s gaming business heads into the crucial holiday season.
Microsoft reported its FY27 Q1 results overnight, highlighting ongoing challenges despite a strategic reset of the gaming business under new leadership. During the three months ending September 30, 2026, overall Xbox revenue declined 2% year-on-year, an improvement over the 10% decline recorded the previous quarter.
Xbox content and services revenue decreased 2% in constant currency, driven by declines in third-party content and Xbox Game Pass, which were partially offset by growth in first-party content. Hardware sales fell 14%. Console sales have struggled amid price increases, and Microsoft has not reported specific unit sales figures for the Series X and S for years.
Despite these financial struggles, Xbox remains a substantial business, bringing in $5.379 billion in the quarter compared to $5.508 billion in the same period last year. However, it accounts for a small fraction of Microsoft's overall revenue, with the Azure cloud computing platform generating $33.1 billion in the same timeframe.
Upcoming Releases and Restructuring
Major recent releases arrived after the close of Q1, meaning revenue attributed to titles like Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be reflected in the current quarter's results. The upcoming quarter also features anticipated releases such as World of Warcraft: Forever and Grand Theft Auto 6.
Leadership discussed the financial results on social media, emphasizing an improved profit margin. A broader restructure of the division has involved workforce reductions, studio closures, and canceled projects aimed at sharpening the focus on major franchises like Minecraft, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls.
Minecraft and World of Warcraft: Forever set records during their recent beta phases, while Call of Duty delivered strong critical acclaim. PC platform revenue also experienced double-digit percentage growth.
Supply Constraints and Market Pressures
Console sales remain constrained by supply chain limitations and high demand. Efforts to increase availability include an expanded refurbishment program, though significant challenges remain.
Recent reports indicate that outreach efforts have encouraged certain inactive console owners to trade in unused hardware.
Console pricing and availability have been impacted by component shortages driven by massive demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure development, as major tech companies secure vital hardware components.
Holiday Outlook and Industry Demand
Price rises and hardware shortages arrive ahead of major holiday software launches, including Grand Theft Auto 6. While console-exclusive launches are expected to drive a surge in interest, questions remain regarding whether hardware manufacturers can adequately meet consumer demand.
Microsoft's forecast for the upcoming quarter projects mid- to high-single-digit growth in content and services, supported by the timing of major first- and third-party software releases.
Growth is expected to peak in the second quarter before moderating in subsequent periods, with hardware revenue anticipated to decline year-over-year.
