Studio Partnership
Bethesda and Xbox development studio id Software, maker of the Doom franchise, has deepened its partnership with fellow Bethesda and Xbox studio MachineGames, makers of the most recent Wolfenstein games as well as 2024's Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
At a press event earlier this week for id Software's Doom: The Dark Ages - Revelations DLC, studio co-director Marty Stratton discussed how the studio is navigating structural changes following recent layoffs. He noted that despite impacts to the team, deliberate efforts were made to ensure viability across game development and technology departments.
"We're working more closely with MachineGames than ever. We've always had a very close partnership with them, but I think we're at a point with technology development that both teams are incredibly talented and have incredibly talented engineers and we're really on an amazing path," Stratton stated, expressing strong optimism for upcoming projects.
Future Projects and Engine Synergy
Industry observers have speculated whether the two decorated first-person shooter studios might be collaborating on MachineGames's rumored next project. MachineGames has historically utilized id Software's proprietary idTech engine for its titles, and leadership across Xbox and Bethesda has emphasized a strategic focus on key major franchises.
In addition to core gaming developments, external media projects like an in-development Wolfenstein TV series further incentivize tight coordination between the studios as they prepare their next major releases.
