Leadership Change at Xbox
Xbox is losing its first chief operating officer (COO) after creating the new role just a few months ago. Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today, according to an internal Xbox memo. Chiang has been at Microsoft for 21 years, serving as the head of Minecraft before being promoted to Xbox chief operating officer in July.

Details of Departure
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced Chiang’s departure in a memo today. “Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today. I’m grateful for her years of service and wish her well,” said Sharma. As Chiang is departing today, her immediate responsibilities are being split up between other Xbox leaders for now, and Sharma notes that more details on COO leadership will be shared as plans are finalized.
The COO Role's Brief History
That indicates the COO position is not going away after just a few months, though it remains unclear why Chiang is departing after such a short stint in the role. At the time of Chiang’s promotion, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma described the new chief operating officer role as a first for Xbox, featuring end-to-end P&L responsibility across content, hardware, platform, and services as part of a wider business reset.
Chiang reported directly to Sharma, and was promoted to bring the various business units together under a single operating model to streamline investment decisions and maintain accountability.
Context and Company Response
Chiang departs amid reports that Xbox is preparing further workforce reductions. When asked to comment on Chiang’s departure, Microsoft declined to discuss the circumstances of her exit. A company spokesperson stated that they do not discuss individual personnel matters while reiterating gratitude for her years of service.
